Botox
Botox is the brand name for a highly purified form of botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox has become one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedures worldwide. It is carefully administered in small, controlled amounts to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, offering a refreshed and more youthful appearance.
Facial wrinkles known as dynamic wrinkles develop as a result of repeated muscle movements over time. Botox works by temporarily interrupting the nerve signals that activate these muscles, reducing their ability to contract. By relaxing the treated muscles, Botox softens the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. As muscle activity decreases, the overlying skin appears smoother and fine lines become less noticeable. Botox does not affect sensation or the ability to feel. It specifically targets motor nerves that control muscle movement. The effects are localized to the areas injected.
Some of the most common cosmetic applications include:
- Forehead lines: Smoothing the horizontal creases that appear when raising the eyebrows.
- Glabellar lines (frown lines): Softening the vertical lines between the eyebrows, often referred to as “11 lines.”
- Crow’s feet: Minimizing wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes caused by smiling or squinting.
- Bunny lines: Relaxing the small lines that form on the sides of the nose when scrunching the face.
- Brow lift: A subtle lifting of the eyebrows by relaxing muscles that pull them downward.
- Gummy smile: Reducing the elevation of the upper lip to minimize gum visibility when smiling.
- Lip flip: Enhancing the appearance of fuller lips by relaxing the upper lip, causing it to slightly roll outward.
- Chin dimpling: Softening the appearance of a “cobblestone” or dimpled chin.
- Jaw slimming or masseter reduction: Reducing the size of the masseter muscles for a more tapered jawline.
- Neck bands (platysmal bands): Smoothing vertical neck lines caused by muscle contractions.
Botox is often used in combination with dermal fillers for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. This is often called a liquid facelift or a nonsurgical facelift. Dr. Neely Khan is a cosmetic and medical dermatologist in Washington DC with the skills and expertise to rejuvenate your appearance.
The effects of Botox are temporary. Typically, it begins to take effect within 3 to 5 days after injection, with full results appearing within 7 to 14 days. We recommend scheduling your treatment 3-4 weeks before a special event such as a wedding.
The cosmetic results generally last between 3 to 4 months. The longevity of Botox results can vary based on several factors, including the area treated, the patient’s metabolism, muscle strength, and the dosage administered. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 3 to 4 months to sustain desired results and prevent dynamic wrinkles from becoming deeper over time.
With consistent use, targeted muscles become trained to remain more relaxed. Many patients find that with consistent treatments, they can go longer between appointments or use smaller amounts while still enjoying a smooth, natural look.
