Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a time-tested skin-resurfacing treatment designed to improve the appearance, texture, and health of the skin. Whether a patient is concerned about signs of aging, acne scars, uneven skin tone, or sun damage, chemical peels can be a safe and effective treatment.

A chemical peel involves applying a specialized chemical solution to the skin to exfoliate and remove the outer layers of the skin. The controlled removal of dead skin cells stimulates natural cell turnover, allowing healthier, smoother skin to emerge. The depth of the peel and the specific chemicals used are carefully chosen based on an evaluation of the patient’s skin type, goals, and specific skin concerns.

Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, and hands. They are often recommended for patients looking to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and sun-damaged skin.

  • Superficial chemical peels act on the top layer of skin, gently dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells so they can shed more easily. This process improves skin texture, brightness, and clarity. Common ingredients include alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic or lactic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid. Superficial peels are often used to treat mild discoloration, acne, and rough texture. They are considered “lunchtime peels” because they involve minimal discomfort and little to no downtime. Patients may experience mild redness or flaking for a day or two.
  • Medium-depth peels reach the upper portion of the dermis, the second layer of the skin. These peels typically use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in varying strengths. They are effective for treating more pronounced wrinkles, moderate sun damage, acne scars, and uneven pigmentation. Recovery time is usually about 5 to 7 days and may involve more noticeable redness, peeling, and sensitivity.
  • Deep chemical peels use stronger agents like phenol to penetrate deeper layers of the dermis. These peels produce the most dramatic results, especially for deep wrinkles, severe sun damage, and significant discoloration. However, they also involve longer recovery times and require careful post-procedure care. Deep peels are typically performed only once and are not suitable for all skin types or tones.

Dr. Neely Khan may recommend chemical peels for patients with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging or sun exposure
  • Sun spots, age spots, and freckles
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Acne and acne-related discoloration or scarring
  • Melasma or other forms of hyperpigmentation
  • Dull or tired-looking skin

Peels can also be used as part of an ongoing skincare regimen to maintain skin health and support a refreshed, youthful complexion.

The selection of the peel depends on the patient’s unique skin concerns, tone, and medical history. During a personalized consultation, Dr. Neely carefully evaluates each patient’s needs and skin condition before creating a tailored treatment plan.
