Kybella
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment used to reduce submental fullness, commonly referred to as a “double chin.” Submental fullness can be caused by aging, genetics, or weight gain, and it often persists despite weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. Kybella offers a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for patients who wish to contour and slim the area under the chin without the need for anesthesia or incisions.
Kybella is the brand name for a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When Kybella is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it works by disrupting the fat cell membrane. Once destroyed, the fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. The body then gradually metabolizes and eliminates the damaged cells through its natural processes over several weeks.
Each Kybella treatment consists of a series of injections placed precisely into the targeted fat beneath the chin. The number of injections per session and the total number of sessions depend on the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals. Most patients require multiple sessions spaced at least one month apart to achieve optimal results.
Kybella treatment is typically an office procedure. Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted to evaluate the patient’s suitability, review medical history, and develop a customized treatment plan.
On the day of the procedure, the area under the chin is cleaned and a topical numbing agent or ice may be applied to improve comfort. Using a small needle, Dr. Neely will inject Kybella into multiple sites beneath the chin. A typical session lasts about 15 to 20 minutes.
After the treatment, it’s common to notice mild, temporary swelling, bruising, or tenderness, which usually resolves within a few days to a week. Most patients are able to resume their regular activities immediately, though some prefer to plan a short period of downtime while any slight swelling settles.
Kybella is ideal for adults with moderate to pronounced submental fullness who prefer a nonsurgical approach. It’s important to note that Kybella targets fat, not loose or sagging skin. Patients with significant under-chin laxity may find the best results with alternative or combination treatments tailored to their needs.
Kybella offers a safe and effective nonsurgical option for reducing submental fullness and refining the jawline. When carefully tailored to each patient, it can provide lasting results that enhance facial contours and support a natural sense of confidence. A consultation with Dr. Neely ensures that the treatment is customized to your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.
